Towels are woven pieces of fabric, either cotton or cotton & polyester that are used to absorb moisture on the body after washing or bathing.
The Ottoman Turks, who were famed for their carpet weaving, brought fancy weaving to the common towel in the 1600s.
Technically, what they made was a 2/2 twill weave with extra warp loop pile, which means that their towels had not just a warp and weft (like any cloth), but also a pile: loops of thread that stuck up from the basic cloth. The loops helped to catch and hold water, making drying after the bath easier, faster and more pleasant.
Prior to the 1900’s towels were made from plain linen towelling but this has since been replaced with a much softer and absorbent terry towelling cloth.
Today most of the world uses thick, thirsty, stylish Turkish Towels thanks to their ingenuity.
